A 6-year-old boy was killed in a go-kart crash at a Connecticut park.
The incident occurred in New Haven County around 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, in Meriden, in the area of Kroneberger Park.
According to Lt. Darrin McKay of the Meriden Police Department, officers responded after 911 callers reported that a child had been driving the go-kart and sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash.
A preliminary investigation revealed that two boys, ages six and four, were in the go-kart. While driving in Kronenberger Park's parking lot, the go-kart collided with and rode under a closed swing gate intended to prevent vehicles from driving onto the athletic fields, McKay said.
The 6-year-old child was wearing a helmet but sustained a traumatic injury. He was airlifted to Midstate Medical Center in Meriden, where, despite the lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead.
The 4-year-old child had no major injuries but was transported to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford for evaluation.
The names of the children have not yet been released.
Originally reports had the age of the boy killed as 5, and not the correct age 6.
Family members were on the scene and are cooperating with the investigation, McKay said.
The case remains under active investigation by the Meriden Police Department Crash Reconstruction Unit.
